School First Aid Kits UK Guide (Requirements & Best Practice)
5 min reading time
Every school has a duty of care to staff, pupils, and visitors. That includes making sure first aid equipment is available, suitable, and properly maintained. While the law doesn’t list exact contents, the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers (including schools) to provide “adequate and appropriate” first aid.
This guide explains what UK schools need, what should go inside a kit, and how often they should be checked.
Do Schools Need First Aid Kits?
Yes. All schools in the UK are legally required to provide first aid provision for staff, pupils, and visitors. This includes:
First aid kits (placed in accessible locations)
Appointed staff or trained first aiders
Procedures for emergencies
The HSE recommends following BS 8599-1:2019 (the British Standard for workplace kits) as best practice.
School kits should contain all the essentials of a standard workplace kit, plus items relevant to children and active settings. Typical supplies include:
Assorted sterile dressings and plasters (hypoallergenic options recommended)
Are schools legally required to have first aid kits?
Yes. Schools must provide adequate first aid under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981. The HSE recommends BS 8599-1 kits as best practice.
Where should first aid kits be kept in schools?
At least one per floor, plus in high-risk areas such as labs, workshops, kitchens, and PE departments. Portable kits should be used for playgrounds and trips.
Do schools need sports first aid kits?
Yes. Sports activities have a higher risk of injury, so PE departments should have kits with cold packs, elastic bandages, and supports for sprains.
How often should school kits be checked?
At least once per term, after any use, and before school trips. Expired or missing items must be replaced immediately.
