Every school has a duty of care to staff, pupils, and visitors. That includes making sure first aid equipment is available, suitable, and properly maintained. While the law doesn’t list exact contents, the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers (including schools) to provide “adequate and appropriate” first aid.

Yes. All schools in the UK are legally required to provide first aid provision for staff, pupils, and visitors. This includes:

  • First aid kits (placed in accessible locations)
  • Appointed staff or trained first aiders
  • Procedures for emergencies

The HSE recommends following BS 8599-1:2019 (the British Standard for workplace kits) as best practice.
